Real vs Synthetic Mink Lashes: Which Is the Best Choice for You?

In 1911, a Canadian woman made the first set of false eyelashes by sewing human hair into a thin piece of fabric. However, it wasn't until D.W. Griffith decided his leading lady in "Intolerance" should have eyelashes so long they touched her cheeks that this supernatural look became a yardstick for flirty eyes.

Back then, false lashes were produced much like their original prototype, making them an okay option for photoshoots but a terrible option for everyday life. Lucky for us, technology has made leaps and bounds since then. Today, one can find types ranging from natural and synthetic mink lashes to acrylic, with every style and finish represented.

If all the choices out there have got you confused, this is the guide for you. So keep reading to learn more about synthetic mink lash extensions, what sets them apart from other lash types, and how to choose between them all.

Why are Mink Lashes So Desirable?

Mink fur has a certain thin wispiness to it, which perfectly mimics our natural lashes when curled. The effect is a doe-eyed, youthful look that everyone finds attractive.

But why? To answer this question, you must first ask why humans find long lashes to be so appealing in the first place.

The Science

The general consensus agrees that long lashes are associated with higher levels of feminine beauty. A study conducted in 2020 supported this assertion and found that specific ratios of eyelash length to eye width are the most desirable. However, there are several different theories as to why this phenomenon takes place.

One theory is that long lashes produce a wide-eyed effect that is associated with youth. As a result, this baby-faced look elicits feelings of honesty and kindness.

Another theory revolves around fertility. There are parts of the eye associated with youth and health: the whites of your eyes and the dark ring around your iris called the limbal ring. Both parts highlight the other, but our limbal ring decreases in size as we age, resulting in less dramatic whites.

However, long, dark lashes help accentuate these parts of your eyes, making you appear more fertile and thus more attractive. Mink lashes help accomplish this by producing soft, thick, and healthy-looking lashes perfect for batting.

Now that you know the science behind the attraction of long, flirty lashes, you're ready to dive into the world of faux mink lashes.

What are Synthetic Mink Lashes?

Mink lashes are made from (you guessed it!) mink fur.

While most of the time, this fur is collected in a benign way where they wait for the minks to shed, this is still not an acceptable product for those who avoid animal products for any reason. Also, as you can imagine, this is a very long process involving the care of live animals. As a result, mink lashes can be on the expensive side.

Mink lashes are also naturally straight and lose their curl anytime they get wet. So you must prepare for frequent re-curlings.

This makes synthetic mink lashes the perfect antidote for those who crave a coquettish look but avoid mink fur for the reasons above.

Faux mink lashes are made from Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT). This polymer produces lashes that are long, tapered, and with a natural gloss. But perhaps their most defining trait is how lightweight and fluffy they are, impeccably echoing real mink lashes.

They hold their curl well but don't hold creases or get bent out of shape. In addition, since they're lightweight and made from strong PBT, they can last much longer than a synthetic lash.

So What's the Difference Between Faux Mink Vs Synthetic Lashes?

The difference comes down to three things: composition, weight, and shine. Instead of PBT, synthetic lashes are crafted from acrylic material. The nature of acrylics is that they are strong and, as a result, quite heavy.

Acrylic lashes are also glossier than their synthetic silk and faux mink counterparts. Unfortunately, their hardiness also makes a less soft lash. While this makes for a dramatic, long-lasting curl, this also means that they will hold their shape if bent or creased. To avoid this, those with synthetic lashes often sleep with silk eye masks.

These traits make synthetic lashes a great option for those who desire a dramatic look and have thick lashes to support the weight safely. Alternatively, those who want a softer, organic look with minimal upkeep should opt for faux mink lashes.

How to Decide Between Synthetic Silk or Mink Lashes

The first thing to know about silk lashes is that they contain all of zero percent silk.

Similar to faux mink lashes, silk lashes are made from PBT. However, the manufacturing process contributes to two very different results. And, likewise to synthetic lashes, the main difference between synthetic silk and mink lashes is in the finish.

Silk lashes are often sold in a matte finish that looks more like the natural shine from your own lashes. This makes them an ideal lash for those craving an understated look. On the other hand, faux mink has an eye-accentuating glow that draws attention straight to your flirty lashes.

Choosing the Perfect Lash

The ideal lash depends solely on personal preference. To find the best one for you, ask yourself; how likely you are to engage in maintenance, how thick (or sparse) are your actual lashes, and how organic of a look do you desire? Then, choose the lash that most answers your top concerns.

For example, if you want a glossy but natural styled lash with a strong curl, no maintenance, and longevity to boot, then synthetic mink lashes may be the right style for you.
